Seismic evidence for a rapidly varying compositional anomaly at the base of the Earth's mantle beneath the Indian Ocean
نویسنده
چکیده
Seismic observations recorded by an African seismic array reveal a low velocity anomaly at the base of the mantle beneath the Indian Ocean, with steeply dipping edges, rapidly varying thicknesses and geometries, and anomalously low shear wave velocities decreasing from 32% at 200 km above the core^mantle boundary to 39% to 312% at the core^ mantle boundary (relative to the preliminary reference Earth model). These characteristics unambiguously suggest that it is a compositional anomaly and its velocity structures can be well explained by partial melt driven by a compositional change produced early in the Earth's history. This chemical anomaly geographically coincides with the DUPAL geochemical anomaly observed in island volcanoes around the Indian Ocean and may provide an explanation for its distinctive isotope characteristics observed at the Earth's surface. ß 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Mapping the geometry and geographic distribution of a very low velocity province at the base of the Earth’s mantle
[1] We determine the geometry and geographic distribution of a very low velocity province (VLVP) at the base of the Earth’s mantle beneath the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, based on waveform modeling and travel time analysis of seismic data recorded in Africa. Our data sets consist of SH, ScS, SHdiff, SKS, and SKKS phases recorded at two temporary broadband PASSCAL seismic arrays in Africa,...
متن کاملSeismic evidence for hotspot-induced buoyant flow beneath the Reykjanes Ridge.
Volcanic hotspots and mid-ocean ridge spreading centers are the surface expressions of upwelling in Earth's mantle convection system, and their interaction provides unique information on upwelling dynamics. I investigated the influence of the Iceland hotspot on the adjacent mid-Atlantic spreading center using phase-delay times of seismic surface waves, which show anomalous polarization anisotro...
متن کاملA compositional anomaly at the Earth's core–mantle boundary as an anchor to the relatively slowly moving surface hotspots and as source to the DUPAL anomaly
Analyses of the relative motion using hotspot tracks, age progressions and plate circuits, and of the absolute motion using paleolatitude data indicate that three major long-lived surface hotspots geographically within a very low velocity province (VLVP) at the base of the Earth's mantle, Tristan, Marion and Kerguelen, exhibit small relative motions (b9 mm/yr) in the past 80 Ma. The geochemical...
متن کاملInvestigation of the strength and trend of seismic anisotropy beneath the Zagros collision zone
The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...
متن کاملUpper mantle structure beneath the Azores hotspot from finite-frequency seismic tomography
The Azores archipelago is a classic expression of a hotspot that has interacted with a mid-ocean ridge. A variety of geochemical studies and geophysical observations point to the influence of some sort of mantle plume on the formation of the Azores Plateau and the adjacent Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), but the mantle structure beneath the Azores has not heretofore been imaged tomographically at a s...
